What makes touchscreen controls actually good
We play a lot of mobile games, and the single biggest reason we drop one early is bad controls. A great idea buried under fiddly inputs is still a game we won't finish.
Good touch controls share a few traits: large tap targets, forgiving timing windows, and clear feedback when something registers. Games that fight your thumbs feel broken even when the code is fine.
Tilt gets a bad reputation, but done right it's wonderful, especially in racers. The trick is a calibration option and a sensitivity slider. When a game skips those, tilt turns into a coin flip.
Our advice to readers: spend the first ten minutes fiddling with control settings before you judge a game. Half the titles we nearly gave up on got much better once we adjusted a slider or two.
And to developers reading this: let us reposition the buttons. Please.
